Nollywood’s faith-based film industry has recorded another major commercial milestone as Agbara Nla: The Return grossed ₦408.3 million at the Nigerian box office, cementing its position among the country’s biggest cinematic successes of 2026.
The film’s distributor, Nile Entertainment, announced the achievement on Monday, October 26, celebrating the production’s continued success after four consecutive weekends as the number-one title at the Nigerian box office.
According to the distributor, the movie has become the highest-grossing film ever released in October and the highest-grossing faith-based title of all time.
The latest earnings also make it the second-highest-grossing Nollywood title released in 2026, behind Call of My Life, produced by Blessing Uzzi, which has generated more than ₦900 million.
In its announcement, Nile Entertainment celebrated the milestone, thanking Nigerian audiences for their support and confirming that the film was still showing in cinemas nationwide.
The latest figure represents an increase of ₦53.8 million from the ₦354.5 million previously reported on October 20, demonstrating the film’s continued ability to attract cinema audiences weeks after its release.
A Strong Cinema Run Beyond the December Season.
Agbara Nla: The Return arrived in Nigerian cinemas on October 1, 2026, more than three decades after the original Christian film became a notable production in Nigeria’s faith-based entertainment industry.
Its performance has challenged the traditional expectation that Nollywood’s biggest commercial successes must be released during the December festive season, when cinema attendance typically benefits from holidays and increased entertainment spending.
Before its official theatrical run, the movie generated more than ₦71 million from preview screenings, attracting approximately 12,134 admissions, according to earlier box-office reports.
It subsequently earned about ₦170.6 million during its opening frame, marking one of the strongest non-December openings recorded by a Nollywood production.
The film continued to build on that momentum, passing ₦307 million before reaching ₦354.5 million and eventually ₦408.3 million.
Its sustained performance suggests that familiar stories, faith-based themes and effective audience engagement can help Nigerian productions attract cinema-goers outside the industry’s traditional peak periods.
Remake of Mike Bamiloye’s Christian Classic.
The new production is a modern reimagining of the original Agbara Nla, created by veteran Christian filmmaker Mike Bamiloye in 1993.
The original film, also associated with the English-language title The Ultimate Power, became an influential work within Nigeria’s Christian movie scene.
The remake revisits the story of Muwonleru, a community under the influence of Isawuru, a powerful herbalist who exercises considerable control over the village.
The narrative follows two Christians, Olaboye and Olatomi, who respond to a call to take the Gospel to the community. Their mission brings them into conflict with Isawuru as they attempt to challenge his influence and introduce a different spiritual direction to the village.
The story explores faith, spiritual authority, the struggle between competing beliefs and the consequences of challenging established power.
Mike Bamiloye reprises his role as Isawuru, connecting the new production to the original film while introducing the story to a younger generation of viewers.
The remake was directed by Damilola Mike-Bamiloye and Joshua Mike-Bamiloye, popularly known as Jay Mikee, with Chris Odeh serving as producer.
Mount Zion Film Productions, Sozo Films and Circuits were involved in the production, while Nile Entertainment handled its theatrical distribution in Nigeria.
Cast and Production Drive Audience Interest.
The film features a cast that includes Mike Bamiloye, Aanu Abiodun, Philip Olubakin, Remilekun Mosiko, Gloria Mike Bamiloye and David Kola Okeowo.
The production has benefited from a combination of nostalgia among viewers familiar with the original and curiosity from audiences encountering the story for the first time.
Its promotional campaign also drew on engagement with the Mount Zion community, church leaders and online audiences, helping to build interest ahead of its cinema release.
The response demonstrates the commercial potential of productions that combine recognisable stories with updated filmmaking and theatrical distribution.
Although faith-based movies have long maintained a following in Nigeria, the latest performance of Agbara Nla: The Return highlights the possibility of translating that audience loyalty into substantial cinema revenue.
International Cinema Release Expands Reach.
Beyond Nigeria, the movie has also secured screenings in selected international markets, including the United Kingdom and Canada.
Earlier reports placed its opening-weekend gross in selected cinemas in those two countries at approximately $120,660.
Its international release provides another avenue for reaching Nigerians in the diaspora and audiences interested in African Christian entertainment.
The film’s performance also illustrates the importance of distribution partnerships in extending the reach of Nollywood productions beyond their home market.
Nile Entertainment has continued to promote the movie’s theatrical run, while the production partners have benefited from the attention generated by its growing box-office earnings.
What the Record Means for Nollywood.
The success of Agbara Nla: The Return arrives at a time when Nigerian filmmakers are exploring ways to expand cinema audiences, strengthen distribution networks and generate greater revenue from local productions.
Its ₦408.3 million gross places it among the most successful Nollywood releases of 2026, although it remains behind Call of My Life in the annual ranking.
The achievement also strengthens the position of faith-based cinema as a commercially significant segment of Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
For producers, distributors and cinema operators, the film’s performance offers evidence that audiences can support a wide range of genres when a production combines an appealing story, effective promotion and broad theatrical availability.
The success could encourage further investment in faith-based productions and adaptations of established Nigerian stories, particularly those with existing audiences.
However, box-office earnings alone do not establish a film’s profitability, which also depends on production budgets, marketing expenses, cinema revenue-sharing arrangements and distribution costs.
For now, Agbara Nla: The Return continues its cinema run with ₦408.3 million in reported Nigerian box-office earnings, adding another significant milestone to Nollywood’s 2026 record books.
