Celine Dion and Paul McCartney are joining forces for the upcoming animated film High in the Clouds, with the Canadian singer set to perform original songs written and composed by the former Beatles star.
The collaboration brings together two internationally recognised music figures for a project based on McCartney’s 2005 children’s book of the same name. The film’s soundtrack will be released worldwide by Universal Music Group, according to reports from the entertainment industry.
Dion, who is also part of the film’s voice cast, will portray Sugartail, the mother of the story’s central character. The announcement adds another major musical element to the animated production, which combines original songs, an orchestral score and a star-studded cast.
McCartney recently expressed excitement about Dion’s contribution, saying he had listened to some of her recorded parts and was impressed by her performance. He also praised the positive reception to her return to live performances in Paris.
The project follows Dion’s renewed engagement with audiences after a period away from major concert performances. Her involvement in the film represents another opportunity for the singer to showcase her distinctive vocals in a production designed for audiences of different generations.
A Story About Music and Freedom.
High in the Clouds follows Wirral, a young squirrel who inadvertently sparks a rebellion against Gretsch, an authoritarian owl who has banned music in her town.
Voiced by Himesh Patel, Wirral embarks on an adventure that challenges the restrictions imposed on the community and seeks to restore music to the lives of its residents.
Hannah Waddingham voices Gretsch, while McCartney also appears in the film’s voice cast. Other notable names involved in the production include Idris Elba, Lionel Richie, Ringo Starr and Jimmy Fallon.
The story places music at the centre of its themes, exploring creativity, freedom of expression and the determination to challenge oppressive rules. Dion’s role as Sugartail adds an emotional dimension to the story, while McCartney’s original compositions are expected to help shape the film’s musical identity.
Award-Winning Talent Behind the Production.
The animated feature is directed by Toby Genkel, with a screenplay by Jon Crocker. Oscar-winning composer Michael Giacchino, known for his work on films including Up, Ratatouille and Coco, is composing the original score based on themes by McCartney.
Gaumont Animation is producing the project in partnership with 88 Pictures, which is handling key animation elements. The production has been developed over several years as McCartney’s children’s book makes its transition to the big screen.
The film is expected to reach cinemas in 2027, with a French theatrical release scheduled for October 13, 2027. Other release dates may vary by territory.
The collaboration between Dion and McCartney adds considerable musical appeal to a production that combines an imaginative animated adventure with a message about the importance of music and creative freedom.
With its prominent cast, original compositions and established creative team, High in the Clouds is shaping up to be a notable family animation release for 2027.
