The House of Representatives has summoned the chief executives of MTN Nigeria, Airtel Nigeria, Globacom and Mafab Communications over persistent complaints about poor telecommunications services across the country.

The lawmakers gave the operators seven days to respond to concerns about declining network quality after some invited companies reportedly failed to appear before a House ad hoc committee investigating the issue. The committee expects the executives to attend a hearing scheduled for October 28, 2026.

The investigation reflects growing frustration among subscribers who depend on mobile networks for communication, internet access, banking, education and business operations.

Poor connectivity can disrupt electronic payments, prevent customers from reaching businesses and make remote work and online learning difficult. For small businesses, unreliable service can also mean missed orders and lost revenue.

According to reports on the committee's proceedings, the operators have been directed to submit relevant documents and explain the challenges affecting their services. The Nigerian Communications Commission has also been instructed to help ensure compliance with the invitation.

The lawmakers have stressed that telecommunications providers must be accountable for the quality of service delivered to customers.

The hearing is expected to provide an opportunity for the companies to explain their operational challenges and outline measures to improve service reliability.

Subscribers will be watching for practical commitments, including improvements to coverage, fewer dropped calls, more reliable mobile internet and clearer communication when outages occur.

The outcome of the investigation could influence the next steps taken by regulators and lawmakers to address service-quality complaints in Nigeria's telecommunications sector.
