Nigeria has confirmed one imported case of Ebola Bundibugyo virus disease in Abuja, with 44 contacts identified for monitoring, according to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare and the World Health Organization (WHO).
The case was confirmed on October 20, 2026. The patient, who recently travelled to Uganda, is receiving medical care in isolation at a private hospital in Abuja.
Health officials, working with the WHO, are tracing contacts and strengthening surveillance measures to prevent further transmission.
What Nigerians Should Know
Ebola Bundibugyo virus disease is a serious illness that may cause fever, fatigue, headache, muscle pain and gastrointestinal symptoms. It can spread through direct contact with the bodily fluids of an infected person who has developed symptoms or with contaminated materials.
Health authorities advise the public to follow official guidance, maintain good hand hygiene and seek medical assessment if symptoms develop after a possible exposure.
Nigeria previously experienced an Ebola outbreak in 2014. Investigations into the current case are ongoing, while identified contacts are being monitored.
