Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, are preparing for a crucial Round of 16 encounter against Mexico at the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco as they seek to secure a place in the quarter-finals.
The match is scheduled for Thursday, October 29, in Salé, Morocco, following Nigeria’s impressive recovery in the group stage, which culminated in a 3-1 victory over defending champions North Korea.
The Flamingos finished second in Group B with six points from three matches, setting up a meeting with Mexico, who also finished second in Group F after winning two of their three group fixtures.
Flamingos Draw Confidence From North Korea Victory.
Nigeria began their campaign with a 2-1 defeat to Poland but responded with a 2-0 win over Puerto Rico to keep their qualification hopes alive.
Their most significant performance came against North Korea, where the Nigerian youngsters produced a commanding display to defeat the defending champions 3-1.
Oluwakemi Adegbuyi opened the scoring in the 15th minute before Oluebube Umejiaku doubled Nigeria’s lead in the 38th minute.
Kanyinsola Yusuf extended the advantage with a free-kick in the 56th minute, giving the Flamingos a comfortable cushion. North Korea scored a late consolation through a penalty, but Nigeria held on to claim a memorable victory.
The result boosted the team’s confidence ahead of the knockout stage and demonstrated its ability to compete against some of the strongest sides in youth women’s football.
Mexico Prepare for Tough Nigerian Test.
Mexico secured their place in the last 16 after finishing second in Group F with six points.
The Mexican side opened the tournament with a 2-0 loss to Spain before bouncing back with a 3-1 victory over Chile. They then defeated Australia 1-0 in their final group match, with captain Citlalli Reyes scoring the decisive goal in the 35th minute.
Reyes has emerged as an important attacking figure for Mexico, while the team’s ability to recover after its opening defeat highlights the challenge facing Nigeria.
Mexico also arrive with a strong recent record at the competition, having finished third at the 2025 edition after previously reaching the final in 2018.
Quarter-Final Place at Stake.
The upcoming fixture presents a significant opportunity for the Flamingos to advance further in the competition and strengthen Nigeria’s reputation in youth women’s football.
Nigeria previously finished third at the 2022 edition in India, securing a bronze medal. The team will now be hoping to build on that achievement by progressing beyond the Round of 16.
Coach Akeem Busari and his technical crew will need to maintain the attacking confidence displayed against North Korea while ensuring the team remains organised defensively.
The Flamingos will also need to manage the pressure of a knockout match, where a defeat would end their campaign.
With both Nigeria and Mexico seeking a place among the tournament’s final eight teams, the encounter promises to be a demanding test of tactical discipline, composure and finishing.
For Nigerian supporters, the hope is that the Flamingos can carry their momentum from the group stage into Thursday’s match and continue their pursuit of another memorable World Cup campaign.
