Bayern Munich delivered a six-goal performance against 1. FC Magdeburg on Wednesday night, winning 6-1 in the German Cup as Harry Kane took a well-earned break following his historic Ballon d’Or triumph.
The England captain, who was named the world’s best footballer at Monday’s ceremony in London, was not required on the pitch as Bayern managed his workload ahead of Saturday’s Bundesliga clash against Borussia Dortmund, widely known as Der Klassiker.
Kane was nevertheless given a warm reception at the Allianz Arena, where teammates formed a guard of honour as he stepped onto the pitch before kick-off. The striker watched as Bayern’s attacking players took charge of the contest and secured a convincing victory over the second-division side.
Olise and Saibari Lead Bayern’s Attack.
Michael Olise and Ismael Saibari were central to Bayern’s attacking display. Olise opened the scoring in the 10th minute before Saibari extended the advantage in the 21st minute.
Magdeburg briefly threatened to make the match uncomfortable when Mateusz Żukowski scored in the 15th minute to make it 1-1. The visitors continued to push forward and came close to equalising again before half-time, but Bayern regained control after the break.
Olise struck again in the 50th minute, then converted a penalty to put Bayern 3-1 ahead after Alphonso Davies was fouled. Davies subsequently got on the scoresheet himself in the 70th minute.
Nathaniel Brown added another in the 73rd minute, while David Santos Daiber completed the scoring in stoppage time to seal the 6-1 result.
Kane’s Historic Award Takes Centre Stage.
Although Kane did not feature in the scoring, the night remained significant for the Bayern forward. His Ballon d’Or victory marked a major milestone for the club, ending a 45-year wait for a Bayern player to claim the prestigious individual honour, since Karl-Heinz Rummenigge’s win in 1981.
The club has planned further celebrations, with Kane expected to present the trophy to supporters during Saturday’s high-profile match against Borussia Dortmund.
Positive News on Vincent Kompany.
Bayern also received encouraging news concerning head coach Vincent Kompany, who had been absent from the touchline after a health scare.
Sporting director Max Eberl confirmed before the Magdeburg match that Kompany had been discharged from hospital. Eberl said the incident was linked to irritation of the meninges, the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord, and that the coach would recover at home before returning to his duties.
Assistant coach Aaron Danks again took charge on the touchline as Bayern continued their winning run without their head coach present.
The emphatic cup victory gives Bayern further momentum ahead of the meeting with Borussia Dortmund. For Kane, the decision to rest could prove valuable as he prepares to return to action after the biggest individual award of his career.
