The killing of Islamic scholar Sheikh Yahaya Ibrahim Masusuka in Katsina State has raised fresh concerns over extremist violence and the safety of religious figures who advocate peaceful coexistence.
The group Jama’atu Ansarul Muslimina Fi Biladis Sudan, commonly known as Ansaru, claimed responsibility for the killing in a video obtained by Premium Times on October 27, according to the newspaper’s report. The group cited the cleric’s views on interfaith coexistence and religious issues as part of its justification for the attack.
Police said the cleric and another man, identified as Adamu Abubakar, were shot outside the cleric’s residence on Monday evening. Two armed men riding a motorcycle reportedly opened fire before fleeing.
The victims were taken to a nearby hospital, where they were pronounced dead, according to the police account reported by Premium Times.
Police Investigate, Security Teams Pursue Suspects.
The Katsina State Police Command said it had launched an investigation and deployed tactical and operational teams to identify and apprehend the assailants.
The reported manhunt also places attention on the wider security response in the state and neighbouring areas, where armed groups and criminal networks have posed persistent threats to residents.
Although Ansaru has claimed responsibility, investigators must establish the identities of those who carried out the shooting, determine whether the claim is credible and gather evidence that can support prosecution.
The killing has also prompted condemnation from rights advocates. Amnesty International called for a thorough investigation and urged authorities to bring those responsible to justice, according to Premium Times. The organisation said the cleric had faced threats and intimidation during his lifetime.
Concerns Over Targeted Religious Violence.
Masusuka was known for Quran-centred teachings and advocacy for peaceful coexistence among Nigerians of different faiths. His killing has therefore raised fears about the risks faced by religious figures whose views conflict with the ideology of violent extremist groups.
The incident highlights the importance of protecting threatened individuals, investigating targeted attacks and preventing extremist groups from intimidating communities through violence.
Authorities have not publicly established the full circumstances behind the killing or identified all those involved. The priority now is to apprehend the suspects, establish responsibility through a credible investigation and reassure residents that threats against religious leaders and other civilians will be taken seriously.
